The Law That Made the Whole World Laugh: Lawmakers Set a Maximum Walking Speed

Slovakia Introduces a New Law Defining the Maximum Walking Speed on Sidewalks

Slovakia has just passed a new traffic law that precisely defines what “walking speed” actually means. For the first time, lawmakers have set the maximum walking speed on sidewalks at six kilometers per hour (about 3.7 mph). The main goal of this change is to improve safety for pedestrians and create clearer rules for everyone moving through urban areas.

Until now, Slovak law vaguely stated that sidewalks were intended only for people moving “at walking speed,” but it never explained what that speed was. This lack of clarity often led to confusion and disputes, especially as more people began using electric scooters and bicycles on sidewalks. With the new amendment, that uncertainty is finally over.

Who Must Follow the New Maximum Walking Speed?

When the law was announced, many Slovaks jokingly wondered whether they could be fined for walking too fast. Fortunately, that’s not the case. The new maximum walking speed of 6 km/h applies only to those using vehicles or devices on the sidewalk — such as bicycles, e-scooters, skateboards, or rollerblades.

Pedestrians and joggers can still move freely without worrying about speed limits. However, anyone on wheels who exceeds the set speed may face a €50 fine on the spot or up to €100 in administrative proceedings.

Why Is This Law Important?

By clearly defining the maximum walking speed, Slovakia aims to reduce the number of conflicts between pedestrians and fast-moving devices on sidewalks. This regulation encourages respect, safety, and smoother coexistence in public spaces. Moreover, it gives the police and city wardens a clear guideline for enforcing rules.

Although the new law sparked plenty of jokes online, it also started a serious discussion about how people share sidewalks in modern cities. If everyone respects the 6 km/h rule, Slovak sidewalks could soon become safer and more pleasant places for walking — just as they were meant to be.
